Bifocal Contact Lenses

Bifocal contact lenses are generally designed in a bulls eye arrangement.

There is a zone for distance the middle, then a zone of reading, then a zone of distance, then a zone of reading etc etc.

When you look through the lens you are looking through distance and near at the same time! So everything you look at is sort of clear and sort of blurry.

Once again the brain is an amazing thing. Some can adjust to this. The brain hones in on what is clear and sharp and tunes out the blur. When it works, the brain is like an optimist with the cup half full of crisp vision.

It doesn’t always work, and attitude makes a big difference to the success of these lenses.

I remember one client who was a very successful architect. He sat in my consulting chair after trying the lenses for a few days.

“It’s no good everything is blurry in the distance.”

So we start reading down the letter chart. Down and down he reads, all the way down to two lines below the 20/20 vision line. This guy is seeing like an eagle.

“What do you mean you can’t see” I say “You have got fantastic vision, the best anyone has ever seen with these lenses.”

“But, it’s all blurry!”

He was unable to tune out the blur from the reading zone of the lens and was finding it incredibly distracting.

These lenses are not for everyone, but they can work well particularly if you have got a relaxed attitude.
