Contact lenses Contact lenses
are another option for the reading glasses wearer.
Have
you noticed that as you get older you don’t get solutions, you get
options.
This is code for “ we can’t give you back what you once had but this
isn’t a bad compromise”. There is
a good ebook by Steve Cogger that gives you lots of great advice on
wearing contact lenses. Its the kind of information that your
Optometrist should tell you if only they had the time. I recommend this book to my contact lens
clients click here to check it out.
Occasional
use Contact Lenses
Lenses are a
great option for occasional use when you really
don’t want to wear glasses. Weddings, nights out and socialising are
ideal with lenses.
They work best when you don’t have to see super crisply or pour over
details for hours.
Challenges
Hazy Vision
Contact lenses for the maturing eye will be a visual compromise. You
need to adjust your expectations before you test drive them with your
optometrist.
There are two main ways to be corrected with contact lenses: monovision
and
bifocal contact
lenses.
Both can work, but the vision will never be like it was 10 years ago.
Dry Eyes
30%
of people over 40 have dry eyes. If your eyes are dry this will
reduce the amount of time you can wear your lenses comfortably. You
might only be able to wear the lenses for 6 hrs rather than all day.
This may be fine if you are only going to wear the lenses for the
evening.
There are some simple
steps
you can take at home to improve your tears and reduce the symptoms of
dryness when you wear lenses.
Handling
difficulties
You take your readers off in order to insert the lens, and it is pretty
hard to see what you are doing. Once you get one lens in that makes it
a bit easier. Usually women are better than men because they are used
to manipulating their lids and lashes in the name of beauty.
Despite the challenges contact lenses are worth considering as there
will be times in your life when you do not want to wear glasses.
Are your suitable for contact lenses?I
have created a quiz
that will let you know if you are suitable for lenses.
Cost
of contact lensesIn
order to wear lenses you will need to be fitted by an
optometrist.
This will involve taking measurements of your eye and checking for
suitability.
Generally the optometrist will trial
you with
contact lenses to see how you can tolerate them and also get a sense of
the kind of vision that you can achieve. You will be charged a fitting
fee which will be in the order of $100 and then you need to buy the
lenses on top of that.
Information about the cost of
lenses is
widely available on line and you will find that the cost of lenses on
line is about 2/3rds of what you might pay at a standard practice.
