What is the ideal size for a glasses frame?

A reading glasses frame needs to be used in a different way from a regular frame.

The best approach here is the Goldilocks way: not too big and not too small.

When bigger is not always better

I don’t recommend that you look over the top of your glasses frame. It will make you look stern and old.

There are times, when it is very useful to be able to have a quick look over the top of your glasses. This would be useful because reading glasses will make your distance vision blurry. Even if you promise yourself that you won’t be looking over. You will. It is just too convenient.

Now if you buy a big frame you won’t be able to easily do this with out some serious sliding of the frames down to the end of your nose. With a cute narrow pair can just lower your head a little bit and you will be looking into fresh air.

Fashion is your friend - for once. Narrower style glasses have been in for the last eight years. So you should have no problem finding one.

Don’t go overboard. You will want a lens depth of at least 28 mm from the top to the bottom to give you a good size reading area.

When small is not so beautiful

I realise that narrow frames are in fashion, but when you work on your computer you need to keep one eye on functionality.

Here’s what you need to work out. Are you an eye mover or a head mover?

If you like to keep your head still and flick your eyes around from screen to desk then you are probably an eye mover. If you are comfortable moving your head with your eyes, you are a head mover.

If you are mainly looking at the screen then the size of the glasses is no problem if you are an eye or head mover.

The problem comes if you are an eye mover and you need to look from desk to screen and back again. You will find your self looking under your glasses when you look down at your desk! This will make you move your head which you won’t like and you will not be happy with your glasses.

So work out if you are an eye or head mover. Then look at the way you use the screen. You might find that you are one of those people who needs a deeper frame to optimise your comfort and concentration and minimise fatigue.
