MagnifiersMagnifiers are pre-made reading glasses with the same lenses right and left. These lenses are set for the average eye width. If you are as symmetrical as a supermodel then ready made reading glasses might be ‘exactly” right for you. Most of us are not that symmetrical.
What are the advantages?1 Cheap and readily available. You can afford to have lots of pairs. One for every room in the house. One for every day of the week. Always a pair at hand when you need to see. 2 No drama if you lose or break a pair. Pick up a pair on the next supermarket run.
What are the disadvantages?1 They are probably not your optimum strength. So you will not be seeing as clearly and comfortably as you possibly could. No problem looking up a phone number, but you might have sore strained eyes if you read the latest Daniel Steel blockbuster. This strain will not be damaging your eyes. 2 Ready made readers are usually single vision lens. When you look into the distance everything will be blurred. You might be tempted to look over the top of them, which is never a good look. 3 Generally the quality of the lenses is quite poor. This means that there will likely be distortions in the lenses. This could cause strain if you read for a long time. 
If your prescription is suitable buy lots of pairs for the convenience. Make sure you always wear your custom prescription glasses when you do a lot of reading
How to choose the strength?1 Use your glasses prescription to work out the best strength. 2 Trial and error. The trick is to choose the weakest pair that you can comfortably see with.
