Progressive Reading Glasses
Progressive reading glasses are the kings of lens sophistication. They grade from your distance vision ( which could just be plain glass) to a wonderful, magical focus at the bottom of the lens. Best of all there are no lines on them. When you are over 40 you don’t need any more lines on your face. Hence they are also known as No Line bifocal glasses or No Line reading glasses.
They can take of bit of getting used to. Most people adapt in 1 to 2 weeks. Make sure you get a non adaptation guarantee. If you are in the 5% of people who can’t adapt, a guarantee you enable you to get a refund or lenses you can wear.
I have a confession to make.I was in the 5% of non adaptors. It took me two long soul searching months to get used to my progressive reading glasses. What was really difficult for me to come to terms with was that for years I have been recommending them to my clients, and yet I couldn’t wear them myself! Then it all clicked at an optical trade show in Milan. I wore them for 4 days straight, and then my brain just got it. I was in a bar with a refreshing “Bire Grande” when I realised I didn’t know if I was wearing my progressive lenses or my straight out distance lenses. Phew.
Progressive glasses are good for 90% of what you will be doing. I would also recommend a pair of regular readers for when you are snuggled up in bed reading or when you are trying to do fiddly things above eye level. The magical reading part is at the bottom of the lens, so above eye level things are a bit tricky. Sure you could tip your head back but then you might be up for some serious chiropractor bills if you hold your head like that for too long.
When you buy your progressive reading glasses do not buy a ready made version or buy them over the internet. This is one precise Mother of a lens. If the lenses are not positioned exactly in front of your eyes they will not perform correctly. Even in the hands of an experienced expert things can still go wrong. Ahem - I may have made the odd mistake myself. Luckily all my clients had a non adaptation guarantee.
