Types of Glasses Wearer

Functionals

Functionals are people (often men), who think glasses make no difference to their appearance. “Hey they are just glasses – I just want to see through them and it doesn’t matter what they look like.”

I’ve seen functionals sitting in their BMW’s, wearing a $1000 suit with a $2000 watch; the mobile phone rings (which is the latest type), and they pull out a pair of $10 chemist glasses to see who is calling.

Price Functionals

You buy on price. “All I want to do is see, so why wouldn’t I just get the cheapest possible pair I can?”

There are times when we all are functionals. We all need a pair for the glove box of the car, in the workshop and beside the bed. It true, it doesn’t matter what the glasses look like because no one is going to see us.

Technical Functionals

As a technical functional you don’t really care what the glasses look like, but you are interested in some prized functional attribute. You might want an incredibly light pair, or a very strong pair made out of Titanium. Maybe you are rough on your glasses and want a bendable pair won’t break when you sit on them.

Boutiques

You know that to look your best you need a decent pair of glasses. What you really want is one pair of glasses that will look good for all occasions.

Brand Boutique

You want the security and status of buying a well known brand. In Australia, there are around 1000 “brands” of optical frames. Most reading glasses wearers would struggle to name more than 20. When I refer to a “brand name” pair of reading glasses, I mean the big brand that you recognize such as Gucci, Armani, Dior, Channel, and Oakley.

Non Brand Boutique

You are happy to wear the 98% of brands that no one has ever heard of. You want to be assured that the frames are of good quality. However, your main concern is: “Do I look good in these frames?”

Sophisticated Wearers

Sophisticates like glasses, you enjoy wearing them, and revel in the different looks they produce. You own lots of pairs that you wear for different occasions: you might have a conservative pair for the office and a wild pair for the weekends.

Almost all people who work in Optical stores are sophisticates. They are aware that glasses can make a huge difference to their appearance and they know what looks good. ( They also get them cheap – which helps).

Some of you love wild and wacky glasses. You wouldn’t be seen dead wearing a “boring pair”.

Most do not start as sophisticates. Like everyone else you started your spectacle wearing career with a degree of resistance but then something clicked and you realized you were expressing your personality through glasses.
