Wearing Glasses
I was about 10 years ago that a middle aged man in a grey suit changed my life and my attitude to wearing glasses. He came into my optical practice conservatively dressed, suit, tie and large gold glasses. “I want something different”. We showed him the standard glasses for men in age bracket: Fairly classical, fairly conservative. Then he spotted them. “I want those”. They were the most unusual frames I have ever seen a man wear. They were ladies glasses. Here they are. They happen to be one of my favourite frames of all time.
We tried to talk him out of them but he insisted. One month later he came back. Here comes trouble I thought. “These glasses have changed my life: people go out their way to talk to me, I am the centre of attention at meetings, women come up to me in bars and offer to buy me drinks just for the chance to talk to me.” That was recommendation enough for me. Within day I had ditched my conservative look and was into a cool, funky pair. It was true it was like living in a different world. Young guys in record stores would start talking about bands I had never heard of. Sales assistants in clothes shops would dress me in cool gear. Hairdressers without any encouragement teased up my hair with all sorts of weird product. Its like being in my mid 20’s rather than mid 30’s. Then the light bulb went on. Eyes are the most looked at part of your body and there is nothing more profound than putting on a pair of glasses to express your personality. Most try to get one pair that will go with everything. So to wear an outrageous pair of glasses is a tremendous non verbal clue for others to make all sorts of judgements about you. Of course in my case it was completely wrong, I really wasn’t some cool funky guy. Since then I have really understood the power of glasses and now I have 19 pairs for all possible circumstances. I really encourage my clients to be aware of the non verbal cues they are sending by the choice of glasses they wear. Take this
test
to find out what sort of glasses wearer you are. Then have a look at some research I conducted on the
types of glasses wearer.
